NAFA locks in 2026 dates after award-winning year

After an award-winning first year as an independent organisation, the North Australian Festival of Arts (NAFA) has locked in dates for its 2026 festival, returning from 25 September to 11 October later this year.

The 2025 festival welcomed more than 47,000 attendees and 651 artists, generating a direct economic impact of $8.2 million and contributing an estimated $21 million to the local and Queensland economies. Nearly half of all events (49%) were offered free to the community, reinforcing NAFA’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion.

“It was deeply heartening to witness people from Townsville, across Australia and around the world gathering for the 2025 festival,” NAFA Artistic Director Kyle Page said.

“From international acts and powerful First Nations cultural celebrations, to the activation of the Strand Rockpool for Drift and a suite of outstanding exhibitions and family-friendly events, the entire city felt vibrantly, unmistakably alive with creativity.”

Festivalgoers were equally enthusiastic, with one attendee saying, “I loved seeing Townsville come to life and everyone out enjoying themselves. The Strand felt like a little escape, and the free Corroboree and Big Name, No Blankets events were highlights.”

NAFA’s standout year was recognised nationally, receiving:
• National Nominee – Best Regional Event
• Winner – Best Community Event (National)
• Winner – Best Cultural, Arts or Music Event (State) at the Australian Event Awards
• Winner – People’s Choice Award for Major Festivals and Events at the NQ Tourism & Events Awards

Mr Page said NAFA was now preparing for an even more ambitious 2026 festival.

“We’re thrilled to announce that the North Australian Festival of Arts will return for its eighth instalment from 25 September to 11 October 2026,” he said.

“Without revealing too much just yet, the 2026 program is already taking shape as one of our most remarkable offerings. We’re developing more than 20 new works, expanding what we offer families, and reimagining our festival hub as a vibrant gathering place animated by internationally acclaimed artists across comedy, cabaret, dance, live music and more, all grounded in the creative strength of our local community. It will be a festival that surprises, delights and brings our city together in ways that feel expansive and deeply connected to the energy and generosity of North Queensland.”

Artists are also invited to be part of the 2026 NAFA program, with Expressions of Interest opening in early February. Performers across all art forms are encouraged to apply with applications closing on 24 February. Full details and application information will be available at nafa-tsv.com.au.

“NAFA is poised to build on this award-winning momentum with a bold and ambitious program for 2026. We look forward to sharing more in the months ahead as our plans continue to grow and take shape,” Mr Page said.
