Description

Listen to the rhythm of stomping feet on mother earth, an ancient culture exceeding 65,000 years of Aboriginal Australia. Included are the rhythm of drums from the Torres Straits unique sounds only of North Queensland and the Torres Strait Islands.

  • Dance groups from across the Townsville region of Gurumbilbarra land of the Wulgurukaba people are invited to share their traditional culture and dance to compete for the inaugural event of Corrobboree.
  • Hosted by Townsville’s Big Eye Theatre, this event is helping to build strong communities connecting to elders for their knowledge of song and dance.
  • Reaching back to their language, groups will use their own local dialect of the area through song and dance for future generations.
  • The competition is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers of all levels and is open to communities who have, or would like to develop, a dance group.
  • Each group will present 3x pieces: an Arrival Dance, a Dance of their choice (one of these must include a chant in your local language) and also a Showoff Dance.

The event will also have an array of market stalls, food stalls, cultural workshops and live music from local musicians. The Traditional Owner Groups of the region will also have information on their history in information pavilions.
